The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program implemented a new capstone option for students. Capstone students enjoy greater flexibility in their course selection and complete their degree by participating in a rigorous interdisciplinary research seminar focusing on the Harlem Renaissance. The new MA capstone course (MLS 798) has been praised by external reviewers as a model of high quality interdisciplinary course design. The introduction of this option has helped the MALS program to see a dramatic (27 percent) rise in student persistence. Graduations are also up 50 percent over the 2015 fiscal year. Faculty Program Director Benjamin Pearson is reviewing the curriculum and drafting proposals for new courses and concentrations.
